Why Halloween Yoga for Pre-Schoolers & Children?

Happy Halloween as today we celebrate the two festivals of, All Hallows Eve and the Celtic of Samhain (pronounced ‘Sah-win’).

This week, we celebrate the fun and joy of these festivals with Halloween Yoga for Pre-Schoolers and Children.

Having curiously explored the meaning behind these festivals, I’ve learnt these festivals are not necessarily pagan or religious celebrations. For me, these festivals of fun and joy provide us with an opportunity to teach our children about Confidence by exploring their imaginations and creativity.

So, what are we actually celebrating in Halloween Yoga?

Samhain is a joyful celebration of Summer’s End, of a time to celebrate the ‘turn of the wheel of life’. Having enjoyed the outer world with the longer days and warmer weather that Summer brings, it’s time to reflect the energy of nature around us. It’s time to slow down as the darker, colder days approach by spending more time indoors, enjoying our inner world.

We may face some dark when to comes to exploring our inner world as we’re not used to doing it. May be there are parts of our personality we don’t like and we fear.

Then there’s the Halloween tradition which is about helping us face our fears.

The Halloween tradition of dressing up comes from the Samhain idea of dressing up in animal skins to scare away anything people are afraid of in the dark on All Hallows Eve.

For Children, the dressing up idea is about empowering them, so whatever they’re afraid of, whether it’s the dark or unfamiliar situations, they feel strong, knowing they have the power to chase this fear away.

Doesn’t this sound familiar? Don’t we see people, Children and Adults alike dressing up in different ways like they’re putting on a Cloak of Confidence?

For example, I see this when a shy Child dresses up as their favourite superhero to help them feel brave and comfortable when going to nursery.

I’ve certainly done a version of this, putting on my favourite outfit, one that makes me feel good and more confident when going for a job interview or when I’ve had a performance review!

Bringing all these ideas together, Halloween Yoga for Pre-Schoolers and Children is about sharing yoga that encourages Children to:

🧘🏽‍♀️       Feel Big and Brave, through Big Yoga poses like Warrior I and Triangle pose

🧘🏽‍♂️       Feel Strong, by Strengthening their bones with Yoga Balances

📖       Feel Confident through a Yoga story where they gather magic ingredients they may be afraid of like spiders and snakes, chasing them into a cauldron, from which they create something new!
